I must first of all offer my appreciation for the care I have received by the cancer team at the Royal Berkshire Hospital especially from my consultants Mr Kumaran Thiruppathy and Dr. James Gildersleve. I was diagnosed with rectum cancer in January 2019 through the NHS screening for bowel cancer, but fortunately the tumour had not breached the bowel wall. I was offered what is considered the "Gold Standard" operation of removing the tumour, and because of where the tumour was positioned, a stoma bag for the rest of my life. The other option that was suggested was a relatively new procedure of a Tamis operation, and though intensive post operative radiotherapy was required, it was less intrusive and if successful no stoma bag was required. I had the Tamis operation in April 2019 performed by Mr Kumaran Thiruppathy, and though as with any such operation I have to be careful of certain foods, in my case the Tamis operation appears to have been a success.

Mr Thiruppathy has a very straight forward approach and is very easy to talk to and a good listener (he also enjoys a bit of a natter, which puts you at ease). I had many questions in the initial consultation prior to being admitted into the Royal Berks for resection surgery due to a Cancer diagnosis. Mr T answered all my questions clearly and directly (both the good and bad news). I felt well prepared for what was about to come, which was the only surgery I had had other than having my tonsils out when I was 4 and having a broken nose fixed, many moons ago when I was but a lad! The team surrounding Mr T were fantastic prior to, during and after surgery took place (which was postponed from the original date when I managed to test Covid positive on the day of the operation - not ideal!). The team included the specialist Colorectal nurses, who are there to help you throughout the journey, the people making up the wider surgical and anaesthetic support (also including a second consultant), the nursing staff, Doctor, Physio and general staff in the Hopkins Ward and the High Dependency Unit at Royal Berks, the preop department, scanning department and the administration team who coordinated appointments (not an easy task) and, more recently, the Oncologist, Doctor Madi. In difficult times and when you are entering unknown territory, having the right people helping you makes all the difference. I am pleased to say the surgery was successful and the Mr Thiruppathy's description of how I would feel directly after and, in the days following surgery, was very accurate. Next stage is Chemo, which will be another challenge! So, no hesitation in recommending Mr Thiruppathy, and a big thank you to him and also the supporting team.

I was referred by my GP to Mr KT in August 2021 for an inguinal hernia repair. I am an active 70 year old. In 2002 I had had a radical prostatectomy, and in view of this Mr KT recommended an open repair, and advised that this was a safer course, rather than encounter possible scar tissue difficulties with keyhole surgery. His advice was that the recovery period for both types of surgery was broadly the same, so very little to lose. The open operation was carried out on 24/11/21, precisely according to Mr KT’s predicted timetable, (and much sooner than I had expected) and without any problems. Following the 4-6 week advice for resumption of activities, and having healed without any discomfort, I was able to get back to golf and tennis after 5 weeks. Very grateful to Mr KT for his professional and caring assistance…..and the upshot is that traditional open surgery should not always be avoided in favour of laparoscopy.
